Abstract

Information infrastructures have been deployed which allow videoconferencing systems to be applied in telelearning. In this paper, simplified dimensioning methods are described for CBR and VBR schemes in an ATM system, and a quantitative relation between video bitrates and transmission costs is obtained by numerical examples. As the measure representing the utility of videoconferencing, we introduce “Willingness to Pay” and “Percent Score,” for which approximate formulas are estimated by opinion tests. The optimum video bitrate is analyzed to maximize the utility per transmission cost, and numerical examples are shown. © 2002 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 1, 85(6): 33–40, 2002
