Abstract

Experiments in the broadest sense are trial-and-error practices common in all cultures. As a method, experimentation is the distinguishing feature of modern science. Depending on objects and instruments, the method varies greatly and it serves different epistemic values. Its central place is the laboratory; however, real-world and field experiments are no less important. Beyond science, experimentation has become an integral part of societal modernization.
