Deviance, Academic
Abstract
Considered as a violation of academic expectations, academic deviance includes deviant behaviors unique to education and academia. Though academic misconduct by students is often emphasized, similarly fraudulent, if not more serious, violations of professional expectations also plague educators, researchers, and administrators in the education system. Academic deviance is a serious problem that has been found to be associated with academic failure and school suspension, expulsion, and dropout, all of which are strong predictors of delinquency and other problem behaviors among students, and can be considered a white collar crime that could end an individual's career, when committed by a professional.
