Content Analysis
Abstract
Content analysis is a method of observation and analysis that examines cultural artifacts. This method emerged in the early twentieth century when researchers began studying the texts of speeches, political tracts, and newspapers. It quickly evolved into investigating the wide array of texts in society, including photographs, movies, diaries and journals, music, television, film, letters, law cases, manifestos, and advertisements. Primarily, anything that is in or can be converted to printed form can be examined using content analysis. This method has a long history in sociology as well as many other disciplines, including political science, history, law, and policy studies, as well as feminist studies.
