Abstract

In this entry, the definition of conversion will be tackled first, followed by a discussion of the origin of the concept and its various dimensions. Phases in the development of the concept will be outlined, such as the development of the two paradigms of conversion research, and the shift from a focus on deprivation to network influence and from a realist to a constructivist stance. The entry also includes an overview of some current trends, such as work that takes the practical, emotional aspects of conversion seriously. It ends with a description of weaknesses in the existing research, and a few suggestions for future development.
