Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication

Summary

Explaining the details of overly complex systems and functions within a heterogeneous society is hard, but a lack of simplicity is the source of unreliability and error. A complicated system will only paralyze law-abiding citizens and reward politicians and opportunists. When one is young, it is easy to be happy and hopeful; when one is old, simplicity becomes the source of happiness. Treating symptoms without dealing with the root cause offers only temporary relief. Establishing a vast number of universities in Taiwan to increase employment and enhance the quality of society is an example of finding the right solution for the wrong problem. Modeling is a useful method for avoiding mere speculation to understand complex phenomena. According to some superficial thinking, the declining birth rate can have a massive impact on higher education in Taiwan and the Mainland, but the effect on student enrollment in Hong Kong should be limited.
