Summary

The author gave a talk in 2018 at a seminar for high school students in Hong Kong organized by InnoTech, a committee on innovation, technology and re-industrialization established by the Hong Kong government. He asked the audience two questions. The first concerned how many in the audience were interested in studying modern science and technology. The author's second question to the audience was whether anyone knew anything about Barry Lam or Kai-fu Lee. No one had even heard of them. Such responses are common in Hong Kong. Many people can see the profit in science and technology but may not understand how it advances society. The Hong Kong government and the higher education sector are responsible for nurturing future pillars of society.
