Internet of Things (IoT) architecture standardization is important to enable manufacturers to deliver IoT high-quality products. An IoT layered architecture is capable of connecting very large numbers of heterogeneous objects via the internet. Narrowband-IoT can operate as a standalone carrier or within long-term evolution (LTE) system spectrum as LTE carrier or in the LTE guard band. Two key LTE applications that have a great impact on our society and our quality of life are: IoT and Smart City. The European Union smart city model is based on the city performance in six key fields of urban development: smart economy; smart mobility; smart environment; smart people; smart living; and smart governance. The chapter discusses narrowband physical uplink shared channels, narrowband physical random access channels, and demodulation reference signals. Master information block contains vital information that is broadcasted by the narrowband IoT base station using a downlink physical broadcast channel.
