Summary

Acute airway obstruction is a surgical emergency. Here an approach to its management is outlined. The causes of upper airway obstruction are described, including infectious disease, neoplasia, foreign bodies and postoperative airway distress. An approach to the immediate management of acute airway obstruction is presented, up to the point where the airway is secured, so that definitive treatment can proceed.
