Summary

Virtual classroom tools offer a core set of features and functionality. Screen sharing, chat rooms, drawing and pointer tools, polls, instant feedback, breakout rooms, and other tools are there for the facilitator to use to encourage interaction. The chapter works toward finding the best way to design a virtual classroom session that truly engages participants. It provides procedures on how to practice using the facilitation techniques that work best online. Techniques discussed in the chapter are (1) using analogies, (2) virtual learning by quadrants, (3) incorporating MOOC (massive open online course) design concepts into online design, (4) small-group data analysis, (5) social media sharing about implicit bias, and (6) think-pair-share for webinars.
