Summary

Learners like to use their own style preference and structure; self-directed learning supports most of their natural learning desires. The key is that the learner must set time aside to do the work independently; the learner must desire the learning. The leadership brand helps leaders clarify the kind of leader they are. Setting goals helps keep one focused and three ways to consider them are: behavioral goals, competency goals, and outcome goals. One has to read books and create a plan on how one will become wiser based on what one learns during the reading. Volunteering for special assignments helps to gain skills and feedback. Compiling a notebook of quotes inspires one. To become a lifelong learner requires that learners move beyond what they learn as professionals and, instead, consider their whole life. Testing oneself is a starting point for individuals who are just beginning to explore self-development.
