Connecting Learning to the Workplace
Summary
This chapter contains techniques that can be used throughout a learning session. The activities in the chapter remind learners that it's all about what they take back to the workplace that counts. The chapter provides an overview of an advice exchange strategy to prepare participants to apply a skill they have learned. This helps them address their perceived greatest challenges, while also raising confidence about the challenges where they already have expertise. A pull up a chair strategy is discussed in which a facilitator “pulls up a chair” (PUC) and poses questions to a group as to how they will actually use or apply, what they are learning, and what outcomes they would expect from these efforts. PUC works equally well with classroom and live online training. The chapter discusses the strategies with case examples.
