Chapter 3

Identifying Participant Expectations

First published: 27 April 2015

Summary

This chapter deals with clarification of expectations as an opportunity to share objectives and to learn participants' skill and knowledge level surrounding the content. It provides an overview of a procedure for the participants to select a topic that interests them, identify their expectations, and work with the same group at various times during the learning session. The chapter deals with an ask and deliver strategy to open and close the session, learn the expectations of the participants for their learning experience, and to come full circle and ask whether their expectations have been met. An activity to visualize success is used to promote ownership by the learner of their experience, and to encourage active engagement throughout the training. A topic networking strategy serves to inform the trainer of participants' attitudes and feelings toward the topic, and to gain buy-in from participants who are required to attend the training.
