Abstract

Bac.te.ri.o.vo' rax. Gr. dim. n. bacterion small rod; L. n. vorax devourer; M.L. n. Bacteriovorax devourer of bacteria.

Proteobacteria / Deltaproteobacteria / Bdellovibrionales / Bdellovibrionaceae / Bacteriovorax

Members of the genus Bacteriovorax exhibit the same general morphological and life cycle features as described for the genus Bdellovibrio. However, genetically the two genera vary considerably, with Bacteriovorax sp. having a lower mol% G + C content, little to no DNA–DNA hybridization (<4%), and <82% rDNA similarity with Bdellovibrio .

The mol% G + C of the DNA is: 41–43.5.

Type species: Bacteriovorax stolpii (Seidler, Mandel and Baptist 1972) Baer, Ravel, Chun, Hill and Williams 2000, 223 (Bdellovibrio stolpii Seidler, Mandel and Baptist 1972, 216.)
