Abstract

This entry on postcolonial theory and feminism begins with a brief outline of postcolonial thought and then reflects on where and how this discourse intersects with feminism. From here, tensions between the two fields are examined and key points of debate are discussed. Particular attention is focused on questions of gender and representation in debates on violence against women and postcolonial feminist scholars' responses to the ways this issue is depicted within their societies by both insiders and outsiders. The entry concludes with reflections on the possibilities of productive feminist collaboration even where there remain profound postcolonial misgivings about the impact of external interventions.
