Abstract

The impaired visibility of anthropology in the public domain is described and some reasons and consequences given. Reasons why anthropologists should strive for better public understanding of the subject are offered. Using as a case study the history of attempts to establish anthropology within UK preuniversity education, conclusions are drawn on the need to engage with multiple audiences and publics and to find ways of writing anthropology that combine academic rigor with intelligibility of style and presentation.
