Concubinage
Abstract
Concubinage has existed in many societies around the world for centuries. Defined as a long-term relationship between a man and a woman who are not legally married to one another, concubinage has assumed four distinct forms as an imperial institution, an elite practice, common-law marriage, and a system of servitude. In all its various forms, concubinage has played an often overlooked role in shaping politics, the economy, and society.
