Abstract

The household is a group of people living together who cooperate economically and share responsibility for the tasks of daily life. As such they play a vital role in the processes of reproduction, socialization, and the development of identity that contribute to social continuity and change. The variability of household composition cross-culturally, within society, and over time has been stressed. This entry addresses the variety of households and the evidence for them.
