Abstract

The assumption that all individuals are heterosexual is the key feature of compulsory heterosexuality. Although heterosexuality is assumed to be ingrained it is, in fact, a social construct, favoring heterosexuals over homosexuals. Compulsory heterosexuality gives males dominance in society and percolates into other institutions, ideas, family dynamics, and individuals’ sense of self. It mplies that anyone not fulfilling his or her role as a heterosexual is behaving in opposition to what is considered “natural.” Instances of sexual experimentation and homosexuality, as well as fluid gender roles, can be found throughout history and around the world and stand in stark contrast to compulsory heterosexuality. For this reason, many theorists and academics believe that forcing people into prescribed gender roles is a crime against humanity, one that can result in self-loathing, depression, and anxiety for those who do not conform to a prescribed sexual role.
