Liposuction and liposculpture
Summary
Liposuction remains in the armamentarium of plastic and cosmetic surgeons as a popular procedure to refine body shape. This chapter outlines the history of the procedure that the author has been involved in since its inception in the 1980s. Through the advance of numerous lipo-aspirators and the understanding of the aesthetic components of the female figure and a male's shape, results can be optimized. The limits to the volume of fat that can be removed in a single session (not exceeding 5 litres), as well as skeletal makeup, muscular components of shape and quality of skin all contribute to and limit the final result. The author stresses the importance of an understanding of the female shape in aesthetic units and total reshaping of each and composite aesthetic units to obtain optimal shape no matter which technique is used or which lipo-aspirator is used.
