This essay looks at key issues in the analysis of translation and translated language. It discusses the fundamental concepts of meaning and equivalence in translation, and most specifically how a source and target text may be analyzed, tracing the development of the terms “literal” and “free” to the major functional and discourse analysis models of the present. It looks at the characteristics of translated language and how research has developed towards so-called “laws” or “universals” of translation increasingly combined with the use of quantitative, corpus-based methods.
