The management of the esophageal symptoms dysphagia, odynophagia or non-cardiac chest pain requires a tailored approach because these symptoms can be caused by a wide range of diseases, some of which are life-threatening. For optimal management, decisions regarding diagnostic procedures and treatment must be taken on the basis of the patient's individual characteristics.
