Abstract

The chapter offers an overview of the analysis of past participle agreement, a central phenomenon in Romance, addressed here in a comparative perspective, with special reference to Italian and French. The theoretical issues raised by the phenomenon are at the core of the chapter, from the influential account first developed by Kayne (1989) in terms of Spec–Head agreement, to the more recent implementations through the Agree relation inspired by minimalist assumptions. With the aim of accounting for the complex empirical manifestations of the phenomenon, the locality of the relation implemented in past-participle agreement is highlighted in some long-distance dependencies.
