Abstract

Fight for 15 is a movement aimed at raising the national American minimum wage to $15 per hour. Its origins lie in a one-day worker strike, in December 2012, when over 100 fast-food workers in New York City walked off the job and called for “$15 an hour and a union.” The strike was the largest ever of its kind in the fast-food industry, and quickly spread across cities and industries. Within years, the movement had influenced mainstream national electoral politics. However, while social movements literature may help to explain the dynamics and outcomes of Fight for 15, a deepened focus on strategy and local social movements is necessary to fully account for the origins and broader significance of the movement.
