Summary

A nano-sized hydroxyapatite (HA) layer was coated on a Ti substrate with a titanium oxide (Ti02) buffer layer by the elec-tron-beam deposition method. The morphological features as well as the mechanical and biological properties of the HA/ TiOi-layered coating were noticeably different from those of a conventional HA coating on Ti. This chapter produces a stable HA thin film on a Ti substrate by using a Ti02 buffer layer between HA and Ti. The HA film deposited over the Ti02 layer exhibited an ultrafine grain structure. The Ti02-buffered HA coating on Ti produced by e-beam deposition was observed to have excellent properties, such as a nano-sized grain structure, good adhesion coating property, high mechanical and chemical stability in vitro, and a superior osteoblastic cellular response.
