The purpose of this chapter on Attachment Theory is to briefly explain attachment theory and link it to professional social work practice. Specifically, this chapter will provide an explanation of attachment theory and trace both its historical origins and recent theoretical advancements. Particular attention is given to empirical support for the theory as well as to its application to social work practice and to the profession of social work as a whole.
