Abstract

The term blood groups encompasses the products of genes expressed as molecules on the surface of red cells in humans. They were first investigated for their clinical importance in the transfusion of blood products and then became useful as genetic markers for population genetic studies. Included in the blood groups are the ABO, Rhesus (Rh), MNSs, P, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, Lutheran, and Lewis blood.
