About this reference work

The present Proceedings contain the invited, oral and poster contributions accepted for the sixteenth edition of the European Microscopy Congress (EMC), a now well-established quadrennial series of European and international conferences dedicated to microscopy. Organised under the auspices of the European Microscopy Society, and held for the first time in Stockholm in 1956, this meeting evolved from a format dedicated to electron microscopy (EUREM series) to all kinds of microscopy after the Brno meeting in 2000.

With more than 1348 invited or contributed abstracts originating from 49 countries, including 39 late posters unfortunately not reproduced in the present Proceedings, EMC2016 has established a new record in the EMC series. This impressive participation demonstrates, if it were necessary, the strong and vital impact of microscopy techniques in all areas of science concerning the study of matter and materials. These contributions have been reviewed by the session co-organizers, whom we thank profoundly for their expertise and for having found the motivation, time and energy to examine such a large number of works. These talks and posters are being presented throughout the EMC2016 week in seven parallel sessions constituting the three main symposia of the Congress: Instrumentation and Methods, Life Sciences and Materials Science.
