The first metalated germanide ion and only the second example of a cluster of the rare nido-10 (iv+iv) structural type, the anion 1, was isolated from the reaction of [Ni(CO)2(PPh3)2], K4Ge9, and “2.2.2”cryptand in ethylenediamine (en). However, the structure of the Ge10Ni cluster (see picture) is distinctly distorted relative to the ideal nido-10 (iv+iv) geometry.

Crystal data: Triclinic, space group P1 (No. 2), a = 12.863(2), b = 13.036(2), c = 23.559(3) Å; α = 96.439(12), β = 104.775(13), γ = 96.95(2)°; V = 3749.4(9) Å3, Z = 2, ρcalcd = 1.717 gcm−3; MoKα radiation (λ = 0.71073 Å); μ(MoKα) = 4.379 mm−1; T = 153 K; crystal dimensions 0.425 × 0.25 × 0.175 mm. The data were collected on an Enraf-Nonius CAD-4 diffractometer with ω-2θ scans over the range 2.4 < θ < 21.0. Of the 8494 reflections collected, 8042 were unique, and 6192 were observed with F0 > 4σ(F0). Data were corrected for Lorentz and polarization factors (XCAD4) [19]. Absorption correction was semiemperical from psi-scans. Max./min. transmission = 0.9083/0.2824. The structure was solved by direct methods (XS). Restraints were implemented to refine the two [K([2.2.2]cryptand)]+ ions (SAME and DELU). The structure was refined by full-matrix least squares against |F2| to R = 0.1053, Rw = {Σ[w(F
–F
)2]/Σ[w(F
)2]}0.5 = 0.2369 (unit weights) (6192 data) for 743 parameters and 336 restraints. The largest difference peak and hole are 1.656 and −1.394 e Å−3.
