The iron sandwich complex 2 containing two [12]crown-4 ligands is formed upon irradiation of the arene-iron complexes 1 in the presence of ethyleneoxide. The Lewis acid activity of the intermediate iron complex that is photochemically formed is decisive for this specific crown ether synthesis. The structure of 2 was determined by X-ray diffraction.

6 Experimental procedure: (η⁵-cyclopentadienyl-η⁶-Toluene) iron(II) hexafluorophosphate 1 (7.16g, 20 mmol) and ethylene oxide (8.8g,200 mmol) were irradiated for 1h in 300 ml of dichloromethane under argon in a photochemical reactor using an immersion tube made of pyrex and a 125-w high-Pressure mercury lamp. The mixture was stirred for a further 16 h and then treated with 400 mL of hexane. The crystalline material formed was separated and dried at room temperature in vacuum (6.8g). Recrystallization from CH₃ CN/Et₂O afforded 3.05g(4.4 mmol) 5, m.p. >250°(decomp).
