Nach Aktivierung als hochvalente Metall-Oxo-Spezies vermittelt ein freies Manganporphyrin den O-Atomtransfer (bei einer Epoxidierung) auf seinen beiden Seiten. Wird das Porphyrin (im Schema als hellblaue Ellipse gezeichnet) aber an G-Quadruplex-DNA (gelb) gebunden, so findet der O-Atomtransfer ausschließlich auf der zugänglichen Seite des Porphyrins statt. Diese Beobachtung beleuchtet den Bindungsmodus des Porphyrins an die G-Quadruplex-DNA.
