Der I→II-Strukturübergang von (CH4+C2H6)-Clathrathydraten geht mit einer starken Vergrößerung der Gitterkonstanten a einher (siehe Bild), wohingegen die Gitterkonstanten von (CH4+CO2)-Clathrathydraten von der Zusammensetzung unabhängig sind. Untersuchungen natürlicher Gashydrate aus Sedimenten des Baikal-Sees bestätigen dieses Verhalten.
