Die Konkurrenz zwischen Tartrat und einem gängigen Indikator (1) um einen synthetischen Wirt (2) wurde genutzt, um Tartrat in Getränken aus Trauben quantitativ zu bestimmen. Der Ansatz demonstriert eine allgemeine Methode zur Entwicklung colorimetrischer Assays für hochkompetitive Medien.
