Abstract
Gold(III) π-complexes have been authenticated recently with alkenes, alkynes, and arenes. The key importance of PdII π-allyl complexes in organometallic chemistry (Tsuji–Trost reaction) prompted us to explore gold(III) π-allyl complexes, which have remained elusive so far. The (P,C)AuIII(allyl) and (methallyl) complexes 3 and 3′ were readily prepared and isolated as thermally and air-stable solids. Spectroscopic and crystallographic analyses combined with detailed DFT calculations support tight quasi-symmetric η3-coordination of the allyl moiety. The π-allyl gold(III) complexes are activated towards nucleophilic additions, as substantiated with β-diketo enolates.

- 20Two orientations of the π-allyl moiety co-exist in the solid state (up and down). For sake of clarity, only one is discussed.
- 21The Cambridge Structural Database contains 1062 (respectively 149) hits for Pd (resp. Pt) π-allyl complexes. The average value for the Pd-C (resp. Pt-C) bond length is 2.160 Å (resp. 2.250 Å) and the average value for the C−C bond length is 1.401 Å.
- 22Upside/down flip of the allyl moiety by rotation around the CH2-CH bond is associated with a rather large activation barrier as well (24.4 kcal mol−1). Rotation of the π-allyl around the Au-CH axis was also considered, but no relevant transition state could be located.[19]
- 23The related features for the η1 cis form of complex 3 are Au-CH2 (ρ 0.127, δAuC 0.853) and CH=CH2 (ρ 0.338, δCC 1.712).[19]
