Hoch spezifisch und katalytisch gelingt die Oxidation von Wasser mit dem zweikernigen Mangankomplex eines einfach negativ geladenen carboxylathaltigen fünfzähnigen Liganden (siehe Schema). Isotopenmarkierungsexperimente in Kombination mit der Membraneinlass-Massenspektrometrie ergaben, dass ein Sauerstoffatom im gebildeten O2-Molekül vom Wasser stammt und das andere vom Oxidationsmittel.
