Belege für den Gillard-Mechanismus der Bildung „kovalenter Hydrate“ bieten die Strukturen zweier gemischtvalenter CuI/CuII-Komplexe mit 2,2′-Bipyridin- (siehe Bild) oder 1,10-Phenanthrolinliganden, bei denen eine Hydroxygruppe an ein Kohlenstoffatom neben einem Stickstoffatom gebunden ist. Diese Komplexe wurden durch Hydrothermalsynthese aus Cu(NO3)2, dem jeweiligen N,N-Liganden und Terephthalsäure erhalten.
