Risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in lean body mass population: A systematic review and meta-analysis

A meta-analysis of 22 articles comprising data from lean (n = 6768) and obese (n = 9253) patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and lean (n = 43398) and obese (n = 9619) subjects without NAFLD (healthy) revealed that both lean and obese patients shared similar risk factors associated with NAFLD including age, body mass index, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, HbA1c, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and uric acid.

Coronavirus disease 2019 gastrointestinal and liver manifestations in adults: A review

Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 typically present with fever and respiratory symptoms; however, gastrointestinal symptoms and liver issues have also been reported. Endoscopic procedures during the pandemic should be carefully selected and proper protection strategies should be encouraged to prevent viral transmission.

Exploring microsatellite instability in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma and its tumor microenvironment

We confirmed that microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was an extraordinarily rare case by using tumor samples of advanced HCC patients that were eligible for systemic therapies. Since the existence of heterogeneity in tumor microenvironment of advanced HCC was also implied, sampling from multiple tumors should be considered for analyzing tumor microenvironment including MSI-H in patients with HCC.

Therapeutic efficacy of lenvatinib in nonviral unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma

Kaplan–Meier analysis of progression-free survival among patients with unresectable advanced hepatocellular carcinoma treated with lenvatinib according to etiology. The PFS in the non-viral group was significantly longer than that in the viral group. Our results suggest that LEN is more effective against non-viral u-HCC than against viral u-HCC.

Lifestyle- and comorbidity-related factors for the prescription of proton pump inhibitors after Helicobacter pylori eradication in Japan

The lifestyle- and comorbidity-related risk factors for the prescription of proton pump inhibitors after Helicobacter pylori eradication were older age and hypertension, while mild endoscopic esophagitis had no influence on proton pump inhibitor prescription.

Prediction of esophagogastric varices associated with oxaliplatin administration

We aimed to identify the characteristics of patients who developed esophagogastric varices (EGV) after treatment with oxaliplatin. If progressive splenomegaly and thrombocytopenia are observed not only during but also after completion of the oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapy, EGV should be confirmed by endoscopy for avoiding subsequent rupture.

Risk and protective factors of acute kidney injury in decompensated cirrhotic patients with ascites on tolvaptan

In cirrhosis, AKI incidence was increased in patients with encephalopathy and poor liver function. While proton pump inhibitor/H2 blocker or kanamycin/rifaximin treatment may reduce the risk of AKI.

Inflammatory bowel diseases in Tamil Nadu: A survey of demographics, clinical profile, and practices

Regional differences in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) profile inform our understanding of the disease as well as prevention, and health planning. This study provides a snapshot of IBD presentation and practices in India at a time when the country is in the second of four phases of IBD transition. The apparently mild nature of IBD, the consequent widespread use of mesalamine, and the association of Crohn's disease with higher levels of education, compared to ulcerative colitis, are of notable interest.

Alpha-fetoprotein and focal nodular hyperplasia: An unconventional couple

We report the case of a 36-year-old patient who was initially managed for a gynecomastia. First biological analyses showed a moderately elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level. An endocrine etiology was then ruled out; the computed tomography scan showed a typical focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH), which was biopsy-proven with AFP expressed on FNH cells. After a follow-up of 24 months, the serum AFP concentration and the liver iconography remained unchanged. This link between elevated serum AFP and FNH rarely described in the literature, should be emphasized.
