Laparoscopic living donor hepatectomy: a review of current status
- Pages: 779-788
- First Published: 08 October 2015

Highlight
Living donor liver transplantation has seen a shift towards left lobe and right lobe graft procurement and the pure laparoscopic method, with the aim of minimizing donor morbidity. This review by Park and colleagues provides balanced insights into the advantages and disadvantages of the laparoscopic approach in living liver donors.

Feasibility and efficacy of gemcitabine plus cisplatin combination therapy after curative resection for biliary tract cancer
- Pages: 789-794
- First Published: 30 July 2015

Highlight
In this multi-institutional study, Kainuma and colleagues showed that standard-dose gemcitabine plus cisplatin combination therapy in the adjuvant setting was feasible with promising survival in patients who had undergone curative resection for biliary tract cancer either with or without major hepatectomy. These results pave the way for further comparative studies.
Predicting length of stay and conversion to open cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis using the 2013 Tokyo Guidelines in a US population
- Pages: 795-801
- First Published: 19 August 2015

Highlight
Wright and colleagues applied the 2013 Tokyo Guidelines for acute cholecystitis to a US population for the first time. The guidelines accurately stratified patients and predicted length of hospital stay and conversion to open cholecystectomy. Obesity was an additional indicator of outcomes and should be considered in risk stratification models.
Efficacy of preoperative dexamethasone for postoperative nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a large-scale, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Japan
- Pages: 802-809
- First Published: 19 August 2015

Highlight
Wakasugi and colleagues set out to evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of preoperative dexamethasone for postoperative nausea and vomiting after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Preoperative dexamethasone showed no clinical advantage, as it failed to significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting, while it increased the cost of hospital stay.
Impact of preoperative asymptomatic renal dysfunction on clinical course after pancreatoduodenectomy
- Pages: 810-818
- First Published: 03 September 2015

Highlight
In this first study to evaluate the impact of asymptomatic renal dysfunction on postoperative outcomes after pancreatoduodenectomy, Nagai and colleagues demonstrated that preoperative asymptomatic renal dysfunction, defined by low estimated glomerular filtration rate, may be a significant risk factor for severe morbidity and clinically relevant pancreatic fistula after pancreatoduodenectomy.
