Renal haemodynamic and protective effects of renoactive drugs in type 2 diabetes: Interaction with SGLT2 inhibitors

  • Pages: 377-390
  • First Published: 06 December 2020
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

This invited review describes the renal haemodynamic and protective effects of commonly prescribed drugs in people with type 2 diabetes and their interaction with SGLT2 inhibitors.

Patient-reported outcome measures ( PROMs): making sense of individual PROM scores and changes in PROM scores over time

  • Pages: 391-399
  • First Published: 16 December 2020
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

The review provides insight into the interpretation of PROM scores by introducing the different types and characteristics of PROMs, and the most relevant concepts for the interpretation of PROM scores, ie minimal detectable change, minimal important change and response shift.

CLINICAL NEPHROLOGY

Significant association of urinary alpha-1-microglobulin compared to urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin with renal insufficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes

  • Pages: 400-407
  • First Published: 23 January 2021
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

Among 513 type 2 diabetics with impaired kidney function, the correlation of urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio and estimated glomerular filtration rate decline with urinary alpha-1-microglobulin-to-creatinine ratio is stronger than with urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin-to-creatinine ratio. Urinary alpha-1-microglobulin may therefore have a higher diagnostic utility than urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin for kidney dysfunction among diabetic subjects.

Clinical factors associated with early and persistent hypocalcaemia after parathyroidectomy in patients on dialysis with severe hyperparathyroidism

  • Pages: 408-419
  • First Published: 27 January 2021
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

The authors present an analysis of biochemical findings related to hyperparathyroidism (HPT) comparing primary HPT with secondary/tertiary HPT. Early and persistent hypocalcaemia after parathyroidectomy in severe HPT were a common event associated directly to preoperative ALP levels. Subjects with persistently low postoperative iPTH tend to attain normal serum calcium levels more frequently after 1 year.

ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY

Acute kidney injury in COVID-19: Identification of risk factors and potential biomarkers of disease in a large UK cohort

  • Pages: 420-431
  • First Published: 01 January 2021
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

This study reviewed biomarkers and comorbidities linked to AKI associated with COVID-19 infections in 632 patients. 34.2% developed AKI with a 50% increased mortality. Severity of AKI was linked to both comorbidities and biomarkers.

GLOMERULONEPHRTITIS

Differential expression analysis of urinary exosomal circular RNAs in patients with IgA nephropathy

  • Pages: 432-441
  • First Published: 26 January 2021

SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

An RNA-sequence analysis of RNAs in urinary exosomes identified a number of differentially expressed circular RNAs in immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) patients as compared to healthy controls. These circRNAs are associated with the regulation of pathways relevant to IgAN and may provide useful non-invasive biomarkers for this condition.

CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

A psychosocial intervention for individuals with advanced chronic kidney disease: A feasibility randomized controlled trial

  • Pages: 442-453
  • First Published: 23 January 2021
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

This study demonstrated that a psychosocial intervention programme, the Kidney Optimal Health Program, is feasible and efficacious in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety in individuals with advanced chronic kidney disease.

DIALYSIS

Association between self-reported appetite and clinical outcomes of peritoneal dialysis patients: Findings from a low middle-income country

  • Pages: 454-462
  • First Published: 07 February 2021
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

This study shows an association between self-reported appetite loss and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Patient-reported poor appetite was independently associated with higher risks of peritonitis, HD transfer, and all-cause mortality.

Hepatitis C virus core antigen as alternative diagnostic algorithm for active hepatitis C virus infection among haemodialysis population: Cost implications

  • Pages: 463-470
  • First Published: 13 February 2021
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

HCV core antigen (HCV Ag) correlated well with HCV RNA among 227 haemodialysis patients, and can be a cost saving strategy over HCV RNA testing to confirm active HCV infection among HD patients.

TRANSPLANTATION

Characteristics of the gastrointestinal microbiota in paired live kidney donors and recipients

  • Pages: 471-478
  • First Published: 26 January 2021
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

This small study looks at gastrointestinal microbiota pre- and post-living donor kidney transplantation in both the recipients and their donors. Faecal samples were analysed before, and 4–8 weeks following surgery. Kidney transplantation resulted in significant alterations in gut microbiota richness, diversity, composition and functional parameters in the recipients but not the kidney donors.

Development of a novel AlphaLISA ImmunoAssay for Big angiotensin-25

  • Pages: 479-484
  • First Published: 30 December 2020
SUMMARY AT A GLANCE

Nagata and colleagues measure the concentration of Big angiotensin-25 (Bang-25) in urine by a novel Amplified Luminescent Proximity Homogeneous Assay-based ELISA method, which uses antibodies specific to the N-terminus of Ang II and the C-terminus of Bang-25. In a validation cohort, urinary Bang-25 levels inversely correlated with kidney function and directly with urinary albumin excretion.
