Shocks and Interventions in Agricultural Commodity Markets

Submission deadline: Wednesday, 31 December 2025

Agribusiness: An International Journal invites submissions for a special issue focused on the impacts of global shocks and policy interventions on agricultural commodity markets and their downstream effects on agribusiness operations, supply chains, and consumer outcomes. This special issue will serve as a platform for empirical and theoretical research that examines how agricultural markets respond to major disruptions—such as climate extremes, energy price shocks, geopolitical conflicts, and policy changes—and how agribusiness firms and food systems adapt to these evolving risks.

We welcome contributions that explore the drivers and consequences of commodity price volatility. Case studies and review articles are also encouraged.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Effects of geopolitical events (e.g., war, sanctions, trade bans) on commodity markets:
Including analyses of how conflicts, embargoes, or retaliatory trade measures disrupt commodity flows, affect domestic market integration, and alter market dynamics.
  • Climate shocks and ag commodity markets:
Including droughts, heatwaves, floods, and other extreme events that impact agricultural supply and price behavior.
  • Impacts of policy shifts on agricultural commodity markets:
Including studies on how policy changes (government, or otherwise) impact prices, production decisions, and market behavior.
  • Commodity price transmission and market integration:
Including the role of input markets, macroeconomic conditions, and futures prices in driving agricultural commodity price dynamics.
  • Futures and options as instruments in commodity price volatility:
Including studies examining how derivative markets influence price discovery, hedge effectiveness, and volatility transmission in agricultural commodity markets during periods of shock.
  • Stockholding strategies and inventory responses under market uncertainty:
Including research on how stakeholders adjust inventory levels in anticipation of supply disruptions, price volatility, or policy changes.
  • Subsidies and farm-level performance:
Includes how targeted subsidies influence productivity, efficiency, and input use decisions in agricultural production.
  • Forecasting and modeling commodity markets:
Including latest econometric methods, or simulation approaches to project commodity prices and demand/ supply behavior.
  • Risk management and structural responses in agribusiness:
Including research on how firms respond to commodity price volatility, input cost surges, or trade disruptions.
  • Review articles on shocks and agricultural price behavior:
Including syntheses of empirical and methodological developments in commodity market analysis.
