Call for Papers: Special Issue
Boron celebrates its 100th birthday as an essential element in plant nutrition
In 1923, Katherine Warington demonstrated that vascular plants cannot reproduce without boron, and this nutrient was added to the list of essential mineral elements in plants. Today, boron is one of the most frequently deficient and actively managed micronutrients in crops, and boron fertilization is critical for optimal agricultural productivity worldwide. Nevertheless, after almost 100 years of research, the role of boron in plants and animals is still not completely clear.
Studies in the following areas are needed:
- the chemistry of boron in soils
- boron fertilizer management in production systems
- boron transport and functions in plants
- the genetic control of boron homeostasis and efficiency in crops
- molecular, morphological and physiological responses to boron deficiency and toxicity in plants
- possible additional roles of boron in other organisms / humans
Marking the centenary of Warington’s discovery that boron is an essential element in plants, Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science is calling for submission of reviews, original research and short communications for a special issue to be published in 2024.
Many contributions to the journal can now be published Open Access through institutional and wider transitional agreements. Moreover, when we highlight papers, we will ensure the content is free to view to reach the widest possible audience.
Authors are encouraged to contact the Editors-in-Chief or Guest Editors for further information:
Deadline for submission: December 31, 2024
Submission guidelines:
Please refer to the journal’s Author Guidelines, which also contain further information on article types
Papers should be submitted at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jpnss
During submission, please select the Special Issue “Boron”

Established in 1922, Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science is published by Wiley and is the official scientific journal of the German Societies of Plant Nutrition (DGP) and Soil Science (DBG), as well as a cooperating journal of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS). Covering the entire spectrum from natural to agroecosystems, the journal has a particular focus on soil–plant interactions.
