Two discs of the mechanical chopper developed by Cole and co-workers (Husheer et al., 2005BB38). When operational, the discs lie parallel to each other and the X-rays are fired at the outer rim of each disc, perpendicular to the disc surface. The X-ray pulse lengths are determined from the relative positioning of wheels with respect to each other, e.g. in phase (top), one rotated 90° to the other (middle), and completely out of phase to each other (bottom).
