The 1,4-bis-tosyl-tetrahydropyridines (I) undergo SN1 reaction with different soft carbon nucleophiles. Following dihydroxylation and subsequent esterification of products (III) result in a stereoselective synthesis of substituted piperidines [cf. (VIII)].
