ChemInform Abstract
Title compound (I) exhibits a piezochromic behavior and not a tribochromic as is expected. The yellow crystals give on mechanical grinding a dark red powder. It is assumed that the yellow form has a folded structure and the red from has a twisted structure. On irradiation (366 nm), the yellow and red solids turn deep blue, and the red and blue solids turn yellow on exposure to white light. The yellow crystals give a deep red solution in toluene, which turns blue on irradiation with UV light. The blue solution reverses to red on exposure to white light. The chemistry of these color changes is discussed. Related photochromic compounds such as (II)—(IV) with lesser degree of molecular overcrowding are not piezochromic.
