A simple and convergent total synthesis of (.+-.)-idarubicinone (cis-IX), the racemic aglycone of the anticancer antibiotic idarubicin, involving the Friedel—Crafts condensation of the preformed AB-ring synthon (IV) with phthaloyl chloride as the key step is reported.
