The title compound (VII) is prepared in four steps from indole (I). The key step involves palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenation of the β-carboline dichlorophosphinic acid salt (VI). The salt (VI) invariably gives shorter reaction times compared to the free base. The success of the hydrogenation depends on the catalyst support.
