Cyclocondensation of various nitroarenes (I), (VIII), and (X) with aryl allyl sulfones (II) in the system MgCl2—DBU—BSA provides the corresponding quinoline based heterocycles (III), (IX), and (XI), resp., in moderate yields. Although the yields are only moderate, this novel facile reaction can be applied in the synthesis of various natural products such as eupolauramine (VII).
