Pd-catalyzed synthesis of N-aryl benzophenone hydrazones, e.g. (VI), opens a new entry into the preparation of indoles via Fischer indole synthesis. In contrast to labile enolizable hydrazones (I), the benzophenone derivatives allow for further functionalization of the secondary amino functionality. In this way, preparation of N-substituted indoles is achieved.
