Reaction of dilithiated ethyl thioglycolate with bis(imidoyl chloride)s of oxalic acid leads to the first 2,3-diiminothietanes [cf. (III), (VII)] which undergo ring expansion reactions upon treatment with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate or a second equivalent of ethyl thioglycolate.
