ChemInform Abstract

The synthesis of γ-Bi12SiO20 by sintering of a pressed pellet of α-Bi2O3 and SiO2 at 600 °C leads to a large volume expansion of up to 56%. This dedensification is suggested to be the result of a reaction controlled by the diffusion of Bi and O towards SiO2 through the layer of γ-Bi12SiO20 formed around silica grains.
